Matthew grew up spending his life in the water. While working in the Air Force, he would spend his lunch breaks surfing in the ocean. However, on Memorial Day in 2014, he was paralyzed when he hit his head at the bottom of a water slide.
He was airlifted to the hospital for emergency surgery and subsequently coded on four separate occasions. He was fitted with a pacemaker and told that he would never move his body again. Today, he has feeling from head to toe and can move most of his body with the exception of his hands. He is determined to continue to grow even stronger.
