C6 Spinal Cord Injury / Ankeny, Iowa

Growing up, kids look forward to milestones like the first day of school. While such events are universal, life is anything but predictable. Justin understands that chance encounters with the unexpected force an individual to find the best within himself.

Justin sustained a catastrophic spinal cord injury on July 4, 2017 when he dove into shallow water at a friend’s pool party. Allowing his training as a lifeguard to take over, Justin dictated his own care instructions to his friends, telling them to float him in the water rather than move him until paramedics arrived. His quick thinking helped minimize potential damage, although he is an incomplete quadriplegic today.

Justin understands the importance of working towards a resolution, and remains committed to his resolution of walking again, the next milestone he looks forward to.

Getting Back Up is proud to support Justin with an exercise-based therapy scholarship to the NeuroRecovery Network at Craig Hospital in Colorado.
