C5/C6 Spinal Cord Injury / Oak Lawn, Illinois

A self-employed painter, husband and father of three boys, Jay suffered a spinal cord injury in 2011 after a painting plank gave way, causing him to fall to the concrete 11 feet below.

The fall resulted in him fracturing both feet, his pelvis in two different places, and a finger. Additionally, he had compression fractures at C6, C7, T1-T3 and T12 as well as a severely swollen spinal cord. As a result of his injury, he was left paralyzed from the chest down. After two surgeries which consisted of stabling his spine with rods and screws and lengthy stays in both the hospital and inpatient rehab, Jay is on the road to recovery.

Jay has been participating in rehab workouts at NextSteps Chicago for the past 2 years and attributes much of his recovery to the rigorous therapy, and great and knowledgeable staff. His insurance does not pay for physical therapy which is stretching the limits of the family’s budget. It is only with the help of his church that has he been able afford this state-of-the-art therapy.

Getting Back Up is proud to support Jay with a scholarship to continue receiving the therapy he needs at Next Steps of Chicago in Chicago, Illinois.
