T9 Spinal Cord Injury / Petersburg, Michigan

An avid motocross enthusiast, whose life revolved around riding and racing, John suffered a life-changing accident while riding his dirt bike as a teenager. He was life-flighted to the University of Michigan’s Motts Children’s Hospital, where he was told he would live the rest of his life paralyzed from the waist down.

John worked extremely hard to achieve each of his goals: an early discharge from the hospital; learning to drive again and getting his driver’s license; completing his outpatient therapy in record time; he also learned to scuba dive, participate in adaptive sports, race Go-Karts and outfitted his dirt bike with hand controls, allowing him to once again ride.

He has since raced at the Extremity Games, medaling in both 2012 and 2013. John credits his recovery to his continued focus on physical therapy. However, insurance will not assist with the continued exercise he needs – extensive physical therapy that has improved his quality of life and allowed him to work towards receiving a college degree.

Getting Back Up is proud to support John with a scholarship to continue receiving the therapy he needs at Project Walk in Orlando, Florida.
