T10 Spinal Cord Injury / Lowell, Indiana

A fire protection and safety engineer, Jessica was working as an independent contractor when she was injured in 2013. A freak accident while working out at a gym injured her spinal cord and left the single mother a paraplegic.

She has worked extremely hard to manage her situation while continuing to care for her son. She travels an hour each way, twice a week, to Next Steps in Chicago for her physical therapy, none of which is covered by insurance. She has made tremendous strides and is able to now walk with minimal assistance from others.

Jessica’s goal is to remain as healthy and independent as possible so that she can provide her son with the best life possible. As her son says, “My mom’s legs don’t work right anymore because her spinal cord was hurt. Sometimes I’m sad that mom got the bad hurt. So is she. But I am proud that she still smiles and keeps getting better because she doesn’t give up.”

Getting Back Up is proud to support Jessica with a scholarship to continue receiving the therapy she needs at Next Steps of Chicago in Chicago, Illinois.
