C5 Spinal Cord Injury / Los Angeles, California

As a sophomore playing on the varsity football team, Cody broke his neck while making a tackle during a September 2009 high school game. He spent a month in ICU, which included being placed in a medically-induced coma for seven days.

Although he was able to breathe on his own and move both arms, he was told by a physician that he would never walk again. Cody’s response was “I will walk again, watch me.”

Cody began outpatient therapy in January 2010 and by June was swimming laps in the therapy pool and standing in a standing frame. By the end of the year, he was able to walk 150 steps with minimal assistance and the help of a walker and leg braces.

Today, Cody works out extremely hard at the Mobility Center at Cal State, Los Angeles, where he has continued to make great strides towards his recovery. In January 2015, he will begin taking courses at Santa Monica College.

Getting Back Up is proud to support Cody with a scholarship to continue receiving the therapy he needs at the California State University, Los Angeles Mobility Center.
