C2 Spinal Cord Injury / Carlsbad, California

Born in 1946, it didn’t take long for Kathleen to fall in love with the arts. As a child she was awarded a scholarship to Interlochen School of Music, and then graduated from high school with several music honors, including national honor for her lead role in a production of Showboat. Kathleen moved to California and performed at Disneyland while studying at Fullerton junior college. After earning a degree in music, she continued to study premed at the University of California, Riverside.

In 1972, Kathleen’s life changed drastically when she sustained a spinal cord injury known as a “Hangman’s Fracture” at the C2 level, due to an auto accident. She was clinically dead for over an hour, before awakening to discover that her body was now paralyzed from the neck down.

Hard work and an unremitting positive attitude helped restore some mobility to her body. However, she’s far from done and firmly believes that life is what we make it.

Getting Back Up is proud to support Kathleen with a scholarship to continue receiving the therapy she needs at Project Walk San Diego in Carlsbad, California.
